Boron Nitride (BN) is an essential inorganic compound widely used across various high-tech fields, including electronics, new energy, and aerospace. Its unique physical and chemical properties, such as high thermal conductivity, electrical insulation, high hardness, and thermal stability, make it an indispensable material in modern industries. The common crystalline forms of boron nitride are hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and cubic boron nitride (c-BN), each exhibiting distinct advantages in different applications.

Emergence and Development

The development of Boron Nitride (BN) encompasses the full journey from laboratory research to large-scale commercialization. BN was first synthesized in the 1940s, primarily in its hexagonal form (h-BN). In 1957, cubic boron nitride (c-BN) was successfully synthesized for the first time. By the 1970s, h-BN began to be utilized in lubricants and insulating materials. The commercial application of c-BN emerged in the 1980s, mainly for high-hardness tools and abrasives. In the 2000s, significant advancements were made in the research of nano boron nitride materials.

In China, research on boron nitride began in the 1970s, with commercial applications emerging in the 1990s. In the 2000s, significant progress was made in the application of boron nitride in electronics and optoelectronics. The 2010s saw rapid development in China’s boron nitride industry, with substantial improvements in product quality and performance, as well as expanding application areas. By the 2020s, Chinese companies have secured a significant position in the global market, with further enhancements in both technology and market competitiveness.

Crystal Structures and Forms

Boron Nitride exists in five polymorphs: hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), wurtzite boron nitride (w-BN), rhombohedral boron nitride (r-BN), cubic boron nitride (c-BN), and orthorhombic boron nitride (o-BN). Among these, the most common are hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and cubic boron nitride (c-BN).

Ø Hexagonal Boron Nitride (h-BN): Its structure resembles that of graphite, earning it the nickname “white graphite.” The layered structure endows it with excellent lubricity, electrical conductivity, and high-temperature stability, making it the most widely used form. h-BN is mainly applied in lubricants, insulating materials, and refractory products.
