The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) officially released ISO 19375:2024 "Fibre-reinforced composites — Measurement of interfacial shear strength by means of a micromechanical single-fibre pull-out test" in November 2024. This standard provides a unified testing method for assessing the interfacial properties of fibre-reinforced composites, filling a gap in international standards in this field.
Standard Overview
ISO 19375:2024 specifies a method for determining the interfacial shear strength between individual fibres and matrices through micromechanical single-fibre pull-out tests. This method is applicable to rigid reinforcing fibres such as carbon fibres, glass fibres, and basalt fibres, as well as thermoset, thermoplastic, and fine-grained concrete matrices. Additionally, it can be used for polymer-reinforced fibres and other inorganic matrices. However, the standard does not apply to the following:
Elastomer fibres and elastomer matrices (such as rubber);
Matrices with curing or melting temperatures above 400°C;
Matrices prone to bubbling or expansion during sample preparation;
Foam materials.
Highlights of the Standard
Unified Testing Method: It provides a standardized pull-out test method for determining the interfacial shear strength between individual fibres and matrices, ensuring comparability and consistency of results.
Broad Applicability: It is applicable to various types of reinforcing fibres and matrix materials, covering thermoset, thermoplastic, and fine-grained concrete matrices.
Clear Scope of Application: It clearly defines the applicability and limitations of the method, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of test results.
Industry Impact
The release of this standard provides a scientific basis for assessing the interfacial properties of fibre-reinforced composites, contributing to improved reliability in material design and application. The China Composites Industry Association (CCIA) stated that the implementation of ISO 19375:2024 will promote domestic enterprises to align with international standards, enhancing product quality and competitiveness. The association plans to organize special training sessions to help enterprises deeply understand and apply the standard.
